1Choosing the Right Floor Warming System
Find the floor warming solution that best fits your room, flooring material, and installation preferences.
What's the difference between DFT, DMC, and WTE Elite floor warming systems?
All three Warm Tiles® systems provide comfortable electric floor warming, but each offers a different installation approach.
DFT Heating Cable Kits offer excellent flexibility for irregularly shaped rooms. The loose heating cable is secured with installation strapping, making it easy to work around vanities, toilets, kitchen islands, and other fixed obstacles.
DMC Membrane Cable Kits are designed for installations using a compatible uncoupling membrane. The heating cable fits into the membrane's channels, providing a convenient way to combine floor warming with a membrane-based tile installation.
WTE Elite Heating Mats are an excellent choice for straightforward layouts and projects where minimizing floor height is important. The heating cable comes preassembled within a thin fabric mat, making installation especially convenient for rectangular areas.
All three systems are available in 120-volt and 240-volt configurations and are intended primarily to provide supplementary floor warming.
Thermostats are selected separately, allowing you to choose the control features that best suit your needs.
Do you still offer Warm Tiles® SAM heating mats?
The original SAM heating mat systems have been discontinued and are no longer offered through EZFloorHeat.
Fortunately, there are excellent alternatives.
For rectangular areas, WTE Elite heating mats offer a convenient, low-profile installation. For rooms with irregular shapes or obstacles, DFT heating cable and DMC membrane cable systems provide greater layout flexibility.
If you're replacing an older SAM system or planning a similar installation, we can help you explore the available options.
Can I order a WTE Elite heating mat in a custom shape?
Our standard WTE Elite heating mats are available in a variety of factory-made rectangular sizes, making them suitable for many common floor layouts.
If your project has an unusual shape, DFT or DMC heating cable may offer a more practical solution because the cable can be routed around fixed obstacles.
Custom WTE configurations may be available by special quotation. Contact us with your project dimensions, and we'll be happy to review the possibilities.
Will electric floor warming heat my entire room?
Warm Tiles® systems are designed primarily to make your floors comfortably warm underfoot while supplementing your home's existing heating system.
Although heated floors contribute warmth to the surrounding space, they should not automatically be considered a replacement for conventional room heating.
Actual performance depends on several factors, including floor construction, insulation, heating cable spacing, floor covering, room heat loss, and thermostat settings.
If your goal is to use electric radiant heat as the primary heating source, a qualified professional should evaluate the room's heating requirements and confirm whether a suitable system can meet them.
Does a floor warming kit include everything I need for installation?
Warm Tiles® heating kits include the primary heating components, but some installation materials and accessories are purchased separately.
DFT kits include heating cable, installation strapping for a typical rectangular layout, a floor temperature probe, clips, and installation instructions. More complex layouts may require additional strapping.
DMC kits include heating cable and installation instructions. The compatible uncoupling membrane is purchased separately.
WTE Elite kits include the preassembled heating mat, factory-installed cold lead, and installation instructions.
Thermostats, mortar, thinset, membranes, and other flooring materials are generally selected separately. Floor sensors may be supplied with the heating kit or thermostat, depending on the product.
Review the contents of your selected kit before ordering so you have everything needed when installation begins.
What types of flooring can be installed over Warm Tiles® systems?
Warm Tiles® systems are particularly well suited for ceramic tile, porcelain, natural stone, marble, granite, and other compatible cement-set floor coverings.
Certain laminate, luxury vinyl, and engineered wood flooring products may also be suitable when the flooring manufacturer specifically approves installation over electric radiant heating.
For these materials, it's important to confirm any maximum floor temperature, underlayment requirements, and installation restrictions before selecting your heating system.
Flooring installed with nails or staples is generally unsuitable because fasteners can damage the heating cable. Carpet and certain resilient flooring products are also restricted depending on the heating system.
Regardless of the finished flooring material, the heating cable must be installed and fully embedded or enclosed in the approved assembly as required by EasyHeat®.
Can I install electric floor warming under luxury vinyl plank or engineered wood?
Yes, certain luxury vinyl plank and engineered wood flooring products can be installed over electric floor warming systems, provided the flooring manufacturer specifically approves their use with radiant heat.
The heating cable or mat must first be installed within the approved mortar or membrane assembly. It should never be placed loose directly beneath floating flooring.
Before purchasing, confirm the flooring manufacturer's temperature limits and any special installation requirements.
A little planning at this stage helps ensure that your finished floor and heating system work together as intended.
Can Warm Tiles® heating cable be installed in a shower?
Certain Warm Tiles® heating cable installations may be suitable for tiled showers when the manufacturer's installation requirements and applicable electrical and building codes are satisfied.
The heating cable must remain fully embedded within the approved mortar assembly, with an appropriate waterproofing system above the heating cable to prevent water exposure.
Ground-fault protection is required, and the thermostat must be installed outside the wet location.
Because shower construction involves additional waterproofing and electrical considerations, we recommend reviewing the installation with your contractor and local building authority before purchasing or installing the system.
How much additional floor height will each system add?
The amount of added height depends on the heating system, installation materials, and finished flooring.
Here are approximate heating-system dimensions before accounting for all mortar and finished flooring layers.
DFT heating cable and strapping: 0.21–0.344 inches.
DMC with a typical uncoupling membrane: 0.387 inches.
WTE Elite assembled mat: 0.211 inches.
WTE Elite is often an excellent choice when keeping floor height to a minimum is especially important.
Be sure to consider the complete finished floor assembly, particularly around doorways, adjoining rooms, and other floor transitions.
Does the heating cable installation change between wood subfloors and concrete slabs?
The same DFT heating cable can be used in approved installations over wood subfloors and concrete slabs. The primary difference is often the recommended cable spacing.
For floors above heated living spaces, standard 3-inch spacing is commonly used.
For concrete slabs or floors above unheated spaces, alternating 3-inch and 2-inch spacing provides a higher heating output to help compensate for greater heat loss.
Always use the spacing pattern approved for your specific product and floor assembly. Cable spacing should never be reduced beyond the manufacturer's limits.
2Measuring and Sizing Your Heated Floor
Learn how to calculate your heating area, select the right cable or mat, and plan an efficient installation.
Do I need to heat the entire floor?
Not usually. For most installations, the goal is to warm the open floor areas where people stand and walk.
Permanent fixtures such as cabinets, vanities, toilets, bathtubs, and kitchen islands are generally excluded from the heated area.
You also don't need to extend heating cable all the way to every wall. Leaving the manufacturer's required perimeter clearance is a normal part of the layout.
For the most accurate product selection, measure the usable floor area rather than relying on the room's overall square footage.
Our Build My System tool can help you work through these measurements.
How close can heating cables be installed to walls, fixtures, or other cables?
Proper spacing helps your heating system distribute warmth evenly and operate safely.
For the applicable Warm Tiles® cable installations, maintain at least 1½ inches between heating cable runs and from walls, vanity kick plates, and other fixed fixtures, subject to the manufacturer's instructions.
Heating cables must never touch, cross, or overlap.
When installing adjacent WTE Elite mats, the outer heating wires should generally remain between 1½ and 3 inches apart to promote consistent warmth across the floor.
Always follow the spacing requirements for your particular product and installation.
What if my room has an unusual shape or several obstacles?
Rooms with L-shaped layouts, narrow hallways, kitchen islands, toilets, or other fixed obstacles are often excellent candidates for DFT or DMC heating cable systems.
Unlike fixed rectangular mats, loose heating cable provides the flexibility to route around obstacles while maintaining the required spacing.
WTE Elite mats can also work in rooms with multiple rectangular heating areas by placing compatible mats alongside one another.
The important distinction is that the heating cable itself cannot be cut or shortened to accommodate the room.
Can I divide one room into multiple heating zones?
Yes. Dividing a room into separate heating zones can give you more control over when and where the floor is warmed.
For example, a large kitchen might have one zone for the main cooking area and another for an adjoining breakfast area.
Each independently controlled zone requires its own thermostat and appropriate floor sensor.
A zone may contain one or more compatible heating kits, provided the electrical load and installation meet the manufacturer's requirements.
Heating products operating at different voltages must not be combined on the same thermostat.
What's the difference between standard and alternating heating cable spacing?
Cable spacing determines how much heating cable is installed within a given floor area and influences the system's heating output.
For DFT systems, standard spacing places adjacent cable runs approximately 3 inches apart. This is commonly used for floors above heated spaces.
Alternating spacing uses a repeating 3-inch, 2-inch pattern. It provides additional heating output and is commonly recommended for concrete slabs and floors above unheated areas.
Current DFT plastic installation strapping has 1-inch notch spacing, making it straightforward to follow either pattern.
Older DFTCK metal strapping uses different hole spacing and corresponding coverage requirements. Be sure to use the sizing information associated with your actual installation components.
The selected spacing pattern should be maintained throughout the zone, and cable should never be concentrated beyond the manufacturer's permitted limits.
How does heating cable spacing work with DMC membrane systems?
DMC heating cable fits into the channels of a compatible uncoupling membrane. The membrane's molded pattern helps establish consistent cable spacing.
Three spacing options are available for suitable installations:
Standard: 12 watts per sq. ft.
Alternating: 15 watts per sq. ft.
Dense: 18 watts per sq. ft.
The appropriate pattern depends on the floor construction and heating requirements.
Because uncoupling membranes can differ in hub spacing and channel dimensions, confirm compatibility before purchasing. The manufacturer's DMC instructions and the membrane manufacturer's requirements should both be followed.
Can I combine different cable spacing patterns within the same heating zone?
For a consistent installation, select the approved spacing pattern that best suits your floor construction and use it throughout the heating zone.
Combining standard and alternating spacing within the same zone can produce uneven heating and may create areas where the cable spacing falls outside the product's approved installation requirements.
If different parts of your project have substantially different heating needs, separate zones may be worth considering.
What if my floor area falls between two available heating kit sizes?
This is a common situation, and choosing the right kit is important.
Each heating cable kit has a specified coverage range based on its approved installation spacing. Small adjustments to the layout and perimeter clearances may help accommodate the available kit sizes.
The goal is to select a cable or combination of kits that provides appropriate coverage without leaving excess heating cable.
Because heating cable cannot be shortened, purchasing a kit that's too large can create an installation problem.
If your measurements fall between sizes, contact us before ordering. We're happy to help you compare your options.
Can I shorten a heating cable if I have too much left over?
No. The heating portion of a Warm Tiles® cable or mat must never be cut, shortened, or modified.
Each heating cable is manufactured to a specific length and electrical resistance. Altering that length can affect its electrical characteristics and create a safety hazard.
Only the nonheating cold lead may be shortened where permitted by the manufacturer's instructions, while maintaining the required lead length and identification information.
If a cable is too long for your intended layout, the correct solution is to select a more appropriate kit size.
Manufacturer-authorized repairs to damaged cable are a separate procedure and should never be used simply to reduce cable length.
Should I choose a 120-volt or 240-volt floor warming system?
Both voltage options provide effective floor warming when properly matched to the installation.
The correct choice depends primarily on the electrical circuit available and the total heating load.
120-volt systems are commonly convenient for smaller areas, while 240-volt systems can accommodate larger heating loads with lower current for the same wattage.
Neither voltage is inherently better at warming the floor. What matters is selecting the correct product for your circuit and project.
Your electrician should verify the available voltage, circuit capacity, and connected load before installation.
Never connect a heating product to a voltage other than the one specified on its label.
How much heating cable can one thermostat control?
Warm Tiles® FGS, ES, and ESW thermostats are rated to switch up to 15 amps at either 120 or 240 volts, subject to the manufacturer's installation requirements.
When multiple heating cables or mats are connected to one thermostat, their combined electrical load must be considered.
For larger installations, an appropriately selected RK-1 or RK-2 relay can allow additional heating loads to be controlled while keeping the thermostat within its rated capacity.
A qualified electrician should confirm the circuit and relay configuration, including any required continuous-load derating.
Why do some DFT instructions mention a 10-amp limit?
You may notice a 10-amp reference in certain DFT manufacturer warranty or installation documentation.
This relates to the manufacturer's requirement for qualified electrical installation when certain cable combinations exceed 10 amps. It does not replace the thermostat's published 15-amp switching rating.
For larger installations, your electrician should review the total connected load, circuit protection, thermostat rating, and applicable installation requirements.
Can multiple heating mats or cables operate from one thermostat?
Yes. Multiple compatible heating cables or mats can often share a thermostat when they are installed within the same heating zone.
The products must operate at the same voltage, and the total connected load must remain within the capacity of the thermostat and any properly installed relay system.
Multiple heating products are connected electrically in parallel, not end to end.
A properly positioned floor sensor allows the thermostat to monitor and regulate the zone.
For larger or more complex installations, have your electrician confirm the electrical arrangement before connecting the system.
3Thermostats, Sensors, and Accessories
Choose the controls and accessories that make your floor warming system convenient, efficient, and easy to use.
Which thermostat is best for my floor warming system?
Choosing a thermostat comes down to how you'd like to control your heated floor.
FGS Programmable Thermostat: A practical choice for customers who want reliable, scheduled floor warming. It features a digital display and flexible 5/2-day or 7-day programming.
ES ColorTouch Thermostat: Offers an easy-to-use 3.5-inch color touchscreen, with programmable schedules and options for monitoring floor temperature, room temperature, or both.
ESW Wi-Fi ColorTouch Thermostat: Provides the touchscreen features of the ES, plus Wi-Fi connectivity so you can manage your floor warming schedule remotely using a compatible phone or web browser.
All three are designed for compatible 120-volt and 240-volt Warm Tiles® systems and include ground-fault protection.
The older FG dial thermostat has been discontinued. For most new installations, we recommend selecting the FGS, ES, or ESW based on your preferred features.
Do I need a Wi-Fi thermostat?
Not necessarily. All compatible Warm Tiles® thermostats are designed to provide reliable floor temperature control.
A Wi-Fi thermostat simply adds the convenience of managing your floor warming system remotely.
With the ESW ColorTouch thermostat, you can adjust settings or schedules from your phone or a compatible web browser, making it especially convenient when you're away from home or your daily routine changes.
If you prefer to control everything directly from the wall, the FGS or ES may be all you need.
Does my Warm Tiles® thermostat provide GFCI protection?
Yes. The FGS, ES, and ESW thermostats include built-in ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection designed to help protect against electrical faults.
The FGS includes Class A protection, while the ES and ESW provide 5 mA ground-fault protection.
Because additional GFCI devices on the same heating circuit can sometimes cause unwanted tripping, your electrician should follow the thermostat manufacturer's wiring instructions and applicable electrical codes when selecting circuit protection.
Never bypass a GFCI or repeatedly reset one that continues to trip. A persistent trip should be evaluated by a qualified professional.
Where should I install my floor warming thermostat?
Warm Tiles® thermostats are designed for installation in a suitable electrical wall box in a dry indoor location.
Choose a convenient, accessible location away from direct water exposure. Thermostats should not be installed inside showers or other prohibited wet locations.
Also consider the distance between the heated floor and the thermostat. The heating system's factory-installed cold lead and floor temperature sensor must reach the electrical box in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements.
DFT and DMC systems typically include 10-foot cold leads, while WTE Elite mats have 15-foot cold leads.
Planning the thermostat location before installing the floor helps avoid unnecessary complications later.
Where should the floor temperature sensor be installed?
The floor temperature sensor allows your thermostat to monitor the heated floor and maintain your selected comfort setting.
For accurate readings, install the sensor within the heated area, approximately halfway between two adjacent heating cable runs.
Position it away from cable return loops, fixed cabinets, unheated borders, and locations exposed to unusual temperature conditions, such as direct sunlight.
The sensor should be embedded within the approved mortar assembly without touching or crossing a heating cable.
Follow the placement dimensions in your product's installation instructions. For applicable DFT installations, the sensor is positioned at least 6 inches from the cable return loop.
A replacement floor sensor is available under catalog number 10739001.
What is the Detecto™ DT-1 Installation Monitor, and do I need one?
The Detecto™ DT-1 is a helpful installation accessory designed to provide an early warning if heating cable is damaged while you're working.
During installation, the monitor connects to the heating cable's cold leads and sounds an alarm if it detects certain changes indicating possible damage.
This can be especially valuable while positioning the cable, applying mortar, or installing flooring, when accidental damage may otherwise go unnoticed.
The DT-1 is not a substitute for the required electrical resistance and insulation tests, and it is not designed to locate faults beneath an already finished floor.
Disconnect the monitor before energizing the heating system.
What is the DFTRK Heating Cable Repair Kit used for?
The DFTRK is a specialized repair kit intended for certain damaged Warm Tiles® heating cables when repair is authorized and performed according to EasyHeat®'s instructions.
It's designed to address eligible cable damage, not to shorten an oversized heating cable or change its original heating capacity.
If you suspect your heating cable has been damaged, contact us or EasyHeat® technical support before attempting a repair.
Proper testing and manufacturer guidance are particularly important when the heating cable has already been covered by finished flooring.
When will I need additional installation strapping or accessories?
The accessories you need depend on your heating system and the shape of your installation.
DFT heating cable kits include installation strapping for a typical rectangular layout. Rooms with hallways, islands, or other irregular features may require additional DFTS plastic strapping.
DMC membrane cable installations use the membrane's channels to position the heating cable. Additional DMCS components may be needed for certain layouts.
Other accessories, including approved concrete installation tape, are available for applications that require them.
Always use compatible installation materials. Improper substitutes, particularly sharp metal materials, can damage heating cable insulation.
When do I need an RK-1 or RK-2 relay?
RK-1 and RK-2 relays are used when a floor warming installation requires additional electrical switching capacity beyond what a single thermostat can directly handle.
The RK-1 is designed for 120-volt applications, while the RK-2 is designed for 240-volt applications.
In a properly designed installation, the thermostat controls the relay, allowing additional heating loads to operate through the appropriate electrical circuits.
These accessories are especially useful for larger heated areas.
Your electrician should determine whether a relay is needed and confirm the appropriate circuit, enclosure, wiring, and load ratings.
4Installing Your Warm Tiles® Floor Warming System
Helpful guidance to prepare for installation and protect your heating system throughout the process.
Does the entire heating cable need to be embedded in mortar?
Yes. The entire heating portion of the cable must be properly embedded in the manufacturer-approved mortar or installation assembly for safe operation.
This includes any heating cable that travels between separate heated areas. For example, if one continuous cable warms both a bathroom and an adjoining dressing area, the cable connecting those areas must also remain fully embedded in mortar.
Heating cable must never be left exposed, routed through wall cavities, or installed loose beneath flooring.
The factory cold-lead splice and cable termination must also be positioned and embedded as required by EasyHeat®. The thicker splice may need to be recessed into the subfloor to maintain a smooth finished surface.
Only the designated nonheating cold lead should be routed to the electrical connection point.
For DMC installations, follow the specific membrane and encapsulation requirements approved by the manufacturer.
What should I do with extra heating cable after completing my layout?
Ideally, there shouldn't be any extra heating cable.
Warm Tiles® cables are manufactured in fixed lengths, so choosing the appropriate kit size and planning the layout beforehand are essential.
All heating cable must remain within the approved floor installation at the required spacing.
Never coil excess cable, place it inside a wall cavity, tuck it beneath a cabinet, or leave it outside the approved mortar assembly.
If your layout cannot accommodate the full cable length, stop and review the kit selection before proceeding.
How tightly can I bend Warm Tiles® heating cable?
DFT and DMC heating cables are designed to accommodate changes in direction, making them suitable for a variety of room layouts.
However, the cable must never be sharply kinked, crushed, or bent more tightly than the manufacturer's permitted minimum bend radius.
For applicable DFT and DMC products, the minimum bend radius is approximately ¾ inch.
Use the recommended strapping or membrane channels to hold the cable in place. Never drive staples, nails, or screws through the heating cable itself.
Can I turn on my heated floor immediately after installing tile?
You'll need to allow the installation materials to cure before operating your new floor warming system.
Although WTE Elite mats can accommodate tile installation during the same installation session, that doesn't mean the heating system can be energized immediately.
Thinset, mortar, grout, and other setting materials require adequate curing time. Turning on the heat too soon may interfere with the curing process.
Follow the setting-material manufacturer's curing instructions and EasyHeat®'s startup requirements before operating your system.
Once everything has properly cured, you'll be ready to enjoy your new heated floor.
What electrical tests should be performed during installation?
Testing your heating cable at several stages is one of the most important ways to protect your investment.
EasyHeat® requires electrical checks before, during, and after installation to help identify potential damage before the finished flooring is completed.
The recommended testing stages are:
Before installing the cable, while it's still on the spool or in its original packaging.
After positioning and securing the heating cable, before covering it.
After completing the flooring installation, before energizing the system.
The required tests include heating conductor resistance, insulation or ground-braid checks, and floor sensor resistance. Additional insulation testing may be specified.
For applicable products, conductor resistance should fall within the manufacturer's stated tolerance relative to the factory label. The referenced DFT guidance specifies -5% to +10%, with additional insulation and sensor resistance requirements.
Record your measurements and keep them with your installation documents. These records can be extremely helpful if troubleshooting or warranty service is ever needed.
Electrical testing should be performed with the circuit de-energized and by someone qualified to perform the required measurements.
What should I do if my cable resistance readings change after installing the floor?
If your electrical resistance readings change unexpectedly after installation, don't energize the heating system until the cause has been investigated.
Compare the latest measurements with those recorded before and during installation.
A significant change may indicate damage to the heating cable, a connection problem, or another issue requiring further testing.
Contact EZFloorHeat with your product catalog number and recorded measurements. We can help you determine the appropriate next step and connect you with EasyHeat® technical support if necessary.
Avoid removing finished flooring or attempting a repair before receiving manufacturer guidance, as unauthorized work may affect warranty eligibility.
5Troubleshooting Your Heated Floor
If your floor isn't warming as expected, a few simple checks may help identify the cause.
My heated floor isn't getting warm. What should I check?
There are several common reasons a heated floor may not feel warm, and many are related to thermostat settings or electrical controls rather than the heating cable itself.
Start by checking that the circuit breaker is on and the thermostat has power.
Next, confirm that the thermostat's GFCI protection hasn't tripped and that the thermostat is set to operate the floor heating system.
If your thermostat offers different sensing modes, verify that the floor sensor is being used as intended. Set the desired floor temperature a few degrees above the current reading and allow time for the system to respond.
Concrete slabs and other substantial floor assemblies can take several hours to noticeably warm.
If the floor still doesn't respond, consult our Troubleshooting resources or contact us for additional guidance. Electrical faults and repeated GFCI trips should be evaluated by a qualified professional.
Why does my thermostat's GFCI keep tripping?
A GFCI is an important safety feature that helps protect against electrical ground faults.
If your thermostat's GFCI repeatedly trips or won't reset, the system may have an electrical problem that requires attention.
Possible causes include damage to the heating cable, cold lead, connections, or another component of the installation.
For your safety, don't bypass the GFCI or repeatedly reset it without identifying the cause.
A qualified electrician can review the electrical connections and required test measurements. If the results suggest heating cable damage, EasyHeat® technical support can provide further direction.
Why does one section of my heated floor feel cooler than the rest?
A cooler area doesn't necessarily mean your heating system has failed.
Floor temperature can vary because of cable spacing, floor construction, heat loss, and the location of the heating elements.
For example, a wider-than-recommended gap between adjacent mats or cable runs may create a noticeable cooler strip.
Areas near walls, fixtures, or unheated borders may also feel different from the center of the heated floor.
If the temperature difference seems excessive, review the installation layout and thermostat sensor location. Increasing the thermostat to its maximum setting generally won't correct an area that wasn't properly covered by heating cable.
We're happy to help you evaluate the situation.
Should I contact EZFloorHeat or EasyHeat® if I have a problem?
We're always a good place to start.
Contact EZFloorHeat for questions about orders, missing components, product selection, sizing, installation information, or general troubleshooting.
If the issue involves a suspected manufacturing defect, a manufacturer-authorized repair, or a warranty claim, EasyHeat®'s technical support and warranty teams handle those decisions.

Please don't remove an installed heating cable or return a suspected defective product without first receiving instructions.
1Choosing a Sno*Melter® Snow Melting System
Discover how electric snow melting can help keep driveways, walkways, stairs, and other outdoor surfaces more accessible during winter weather.
What's the difference between G-Mats, stair-tread mats, and SMK heating cable?
EasyHeat® Sno*Melter® offers several product options designed for different outdoor surfaces.
G-Mats are preassembled heating mats available in 18-inch and 36-inch widths. They're well suited for driveways, walkways, patios, and other areas with relatively straightforward layouts.
Stair-Tread Heating Mats are designed for outdoor steps, providing targeted heating across stair treads. They're particularly useful for stairways where snow and ice can create slippery conditions.
SMK Heating Cable provides greater layout flexibility for irregularly shaped surfaces. The cable can be secured to suitable reinforcement materials in accordance with the installation instructions, making it useful for curved walkways, landings, and unusual patio configurations.
Each system requires compatible electrical controls, which are selected separately.
How much heat do Sno*Melter® systems produce?
Sno*Melter® products are designed to provide the heating output needed for outdoor snow melting applications.
G-Mats provide approximately 50 watts per square foot.
SMK heating cable output depends on the installed cable spacing:
3 inches: 45 watts per sq. ft.
4 inches: 35 watts per sq. ft.
The appropriate system depends on your surface, project layout, and local conditions.
Heating cable must always be installed at the spacing specified by the manufacturer. Reducing spacing beyond approved limits is not an acceptable way to increase heating output.
Will a Sno*Melter® system keep my driveway or walkway completely clear during heavy snowstorms?
Sno*Melter® systems are designed to help reduce snow and ice accumulation on heated outdoor surfaces, providing added convenience and potentially reducing the need for manual snow removal.
Performance depends on several factors, including snowfall intensity, outdoor temperature, wind, surface construction, drainage, and the heating system's capacity.
During especially heavy or rapidly accumulating snowfall, snow may collect faster than the system can melt it.
For the best results, proper system sizing, automatic controls, sensor placement, and effective drainage should all be considered during planning.
Does a snow melting system eliminate the need for drainage or waterproofing?
A properly designed snow melting system works together with the surface's drainage system.
As snow and ice melt, the resulting water needs somewhere to go. Without adequate drainage, water can collect and potentially refreeze outside the heated area.
For that reason, proper grading, drainage, waterproofing where required, and sound surface construction remain essential.
Snow melting equipment is designed to warm the surface, not correct existing drainage or structural problems.
Can I install a heating mat on just one outdoor step?
Yes, heating a single step or elevation change may be possible, but the most suitable product depends on the surrounding layout.
Sno*Melter® stair-tread mats are primarily intended for stairways with multiple steps.
If your project involves a single step between a landing and walkway, it may be more practical to incorporate that area into the adjoining snow melting system.
Contact us with your measurements and a brief description of the project. We can help you review the available options before ordering.
Are Sno*Melter® systems available in 120 volts or other voltages?
Our standard online selection of Sno*Melter® G-Mats, stair-tread mats, and SMK heating cable kits is designed for 240-volt applications.
Other voltage configurations, longer factory-installed cold leads, and certain custom products may be available by special quotation.
If your project requires something other than the standard listed configuration, please contact us before finalizing your design.
Your electrician should always confirm that the selected products match the available electrical supply.
2Installing and Controlling Sno*Melter® Systems
Important installation and control considerations for a dependable outdoor snow melting system.
How deep should Sno*Melter® heating mats be installed?
For typical concrete installations, Sno*Melter® G-Mats are positioned approximately 2 inches beneath the finished surface, subject to the manufacturer's specific installation instructions.
The required installation depth may differ for asphalt, pavers, or other approved surface materials.
Correct placement is important for protecting the heating elements and transferring heat effectively to the surface.
Review the product's installation instructions with your contractor before construction begins.
Indoor floor warming products and outdoor snow melting products are designed for different applications and should not be used interchangeably.
Can Sno*Melter® heating mats cross expansion joints?
Expansion and movement joints require special consideration because the surrounding pavement can move as temperatures and ground conditions change.
Heating cable and mats must be installed according to the manufacturer's requirements for crossing or avoiding these joints.
The referenced Sno*Melter® instructions include specific restrictions on cable routing through expansion joints, including a 20-foot limitation for certain joint conditions.
We recommend reviewing the proposed joint locations with your contractor before installing the heating system.
Heating mats must never be folded, overlapped, or modified to fit around a joint.
Can I cut a G-Mat or shorten SMK heating cable?
No. Sno*Melter® heating cables and mats are manufactured to specific lengths and electrical ratings.
Cutting or shortening the heating portion can damage the system and create a safety hazard.
SMK cable kits typically include factory-installed cold leads, commonly 20 feet in standard configurations.
If your electrical connection is farther away, contact us about the availability of a longer factory-installed lead before ordering.
What is an electrical contactor, and when does my snow melting system need one?
A contactor is an electrically operated switch used to control larger heating loads.
For smaller installations, an SA-1 controller may be able to switch a compatible load directly within its rated capacity.
Larger systems generally require one or more appropriately rated contactors.
The MSC-1 controller uses contactors to switch the actual heating load. Its outputs control the contactor coils rather than powering the heating mats directly.
Contactor selection depends on the connected load, control voltage, and electrical design.
For example, MSC-1 systems require compatible 120-volt-coil contactors. Your electrician should confirm the correct model and ratings before installation.
What's the difference between the SA-1 and MSC-1 snow melting controllers?
Both controllers help automate snow melting operation, but they're designed for different system sizes and levels of control.
SA-1 Automatic Controller: An excellent option for smaller, simpler installations. It combines temperature and moisture sensing and activates the system when suitable snow melting conditions are detected. Its operating threshold is approximately 38°F, and it provides an additional heating period after moisture is no longer detected.
MSC-1 Multi-Zone Controller: Designed for larger or more complex installations. It supports up to three independently controlled or prioritized zones, uses compatible external sensors, and offers adjustable operating and hold-time settings.
The MSC-1 requires appropriately rated contactors to switch the heating loads.
If you're unsure which controller is right for your project, we can help you compare the available options.
Does EZFloorHeat sell roof and gutter de-icing cable?
Our primary focus is electric floor warming and outdoor surface snow melting.
We do not currently offer a dedicated roof and gutter heating cable system.
However, we offer certain EasyHeat® control components that may be used in compatible snow melting or gutter-related control applications.
For example, the MSCG-1 control package includes an MSC-1 controller, TS-1 temperature sensor, and MSG-1 moisture sensor.
This package does not include roof or gutter heating cable. Always confirm the suitability of the complete system for your intended application.
Should I use an aerial snow sensor or an in-pavement sensor?
Both sensor types help automate snow melting operation by detecting conditions associated with snow or ice.
MSA-1 Aerial Sensor: Installed above the heated surface in a location exposed to precipitation. It's useful when you want the system to respond to falling snow or moisture in the surrounding environment.
MSP-1 In-Pavement Sensor: Installed within the pavement surface to detect moisture and surface temperature conditions directly where snow melting is needed.
The MSG-1 is intended for compatible gutter or downspout sensing applications.
MSC-1 systems also use the TS-1 temperature sensor supplied with the controller.
The best choice depends on your system layout and control strategy. Sensor placement is especially important, so follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
Are Sno*Melter® mats stocked, or are they made to order?
Many standard Sno*Melter® G-Mats and stair-tread mats are designated Made to Stock, meaning the manufacturer normally produces them for inventory.
When available, these products typically ship within 1–3 business days after payment is completed.
If the manufacturer is temporarily out of stock, additional lead time is required, often approximately 1–6 weeks.
SMK heating cable kits and magnetic contactors are generally Made to Order, with typical lead times also averaging 1–6 weeks.
These are estimates rather than guaranteed delivery dates.
If you're coordinating an installation crew or concrete pour, please contact us for the latest availability information before scheduling your project.

(240) 876-0904
We're committed to making your shopping experience as straightforward and informative as possible, from choosing your products to getting ready for installation.
Many common issues can be traced to thermostat settings, electrical connections, or floor temperature sensors. These are often easier to resolve than you might expect, and they don't necessarily mean there's a problem with your heating cable.
Whether you're preparing to install a new system or troubleshooting an existing floor, the information below will help you understand what to check, what to expect, and when to contact a qualified professional.
1Start with a successful installation
The best way to avoid problems later is to protect and test your heating system throughout installation. A few simple precautions can help identify potential damage before the heating cable is covered by mortar and finished flooring.
Protect your heating cable while you work
We recommend using the EasyHeat® Warm Tiles® Detecto™ DT-1 Installation Monitor whenever you're installing a Warm Tiles® heating cable or mat.
The Detecto™ DT-1 connects to the heating cable's cold leads and sounds an audible alarm if it detects certain electrical changes that may indicate cable damage. This is particularly helpful while positioning cable, applying mortar, and installing flooring.
If a tool accidentally damages the cable, the alarm can alert you while the affected area is still accessible.
The DT-1 is an installation monitor, not a substitute for the required electrical tests or a diagnostic tool for a finished floor. Disconnect it before connecting or energizing the heating system.
Follow these important installation practices
- Maintain proper cable spacing. Heating cable runs must never touch, cross, or overlap. Follow the approved spacing pattern and minimum clearances for your specific system.
- Keep the heating cable fully embedded. The entire heating portion of the cable must be installed within the approved mortar or floor assembly, including any cable transitioning between heated areas.
- Position factory connections correctly. The factory cold-lead splice and end termination must be installed in the locations specified by EasyHeat®. Recess thicker connections where required to maintain a smooth finished floor.
- Route only the designated cold lead to the electrical box. Never route heating cable or its factory splice into a wall cavity. Maintain the required cold-lead length and identification label.
- Confirm the correct voltage. Match the voltage printed on the heating cable's factory label to the electrical supply.
- Plan for appropriate electrical protection. Use the required thermostat, circuit protection, and ground-fault protection in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and applicable codes.
- Never shorten or store excess heating cable. Select the correct kit size before installation. Excess heating cable cannot be coiled, cut, or left exposed.
Before covering the cable, complete and record the electrical tests required by EasyHeat®.
2Test your heating system at three important stages
Testing your heating cable throughout installation helps confirm that it remains in good condition as the work progresses. We recommend keeping a written record of the results with your installation documents. This information can be especially valuable if you ever need technical support or warranty assistance.
Test 1 — Before installation
Test the heating cable while it's still on the spool or before laying out the mat. This establishes your starting measurements and helps confirm the product's electrical condition before installation begins.
Test 2 — After positioning the heating cable
Once the cable or mat has been laid out and secured, repeat the required tests before applying mortar. This helps identify damage that may have occurred during layout.
Test 3 — After the finished flooring is installed
Complete the final electrical tests before energizing the heating system. Compare these readings with the earlier results to confirm that no detectable damage occurred during installation.
What measurements should be recorded?
A qualified installer or electrician should perform the required resistance and insulation tests with the heating system disconnected from power.
| Test | Expected result from the referenced guidance |
|---|---|
| Heating conductor resistance | Within -5% to +10% of the factory label |
| Each heating conductor to ground braid | Open circuit (OL or infinity) |
| Floor temperature sensor resistance | Typically 7,000–14,000 ohms at room temperature |
| Insulation resistance, using a 500 V DC tester | At least 10 megohms |
These are the values provided in the current troubleshooting guidance. Always verify the acceptable measurements against the installation instructions for your specific product and sensor.
Why keep a test log?
If the readings remain within specification throughout installation, that's a good indication the cable has maintained its electrical integrity. If a reading changes unexpectedly, you can investigate before moving forward.
A satisfactory resistance test doesn't guarantee that every aspect of the system is correct, but it is an important part of verifying the installation. If a test result falls outside the manufacturer's limits, stop installation or leave the system de-energized until the cause has been evaluated.
3My floor isn't warming. What should I check?
If your finished floor doesn't seem to be heating properly, there are several common explanations. Start with the simple, non-electrical checks below. Many problems can be resolved without disturbing the finished flooring.
Check your thermostat settings
Your thermostat controls when the heating system operates and how warm the floor becomes. Confirm that the thermostat is turned on, set to the appropriate heating mode, and programmed to request heat. If your thermostat uses a floor temperature sensor, make sure it's configured to use that sensor as intended. Try setting the desired floor temperature a few degrees above the current reading and allow sufficient time for the floor to respond. Concrete slabs and thicker floor assemblies can take several hours to warm noticeably.
Check the circuit breaker
Verify that the heating system's circuit breaker hasn't tripped. If it has tripped, you may reset it once if it is safe to do so and there are no signs of an electrical fault. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and contact a qualified electrician. Repeated breaker trips should never be ignored.
Check for a thermostat GFCI trip
Warm Tiles® thermostats include ground-fault protection. If the thermostat indicates a GFCI fault, follow its instructions for identifying the condition and resetting the device, if appropriate. If the GFCI trips again, stop using the system and have the installation inspected. A recurring ground-fault trip may indicate a wiring problem, damaged heating cable, or another electrical issue.
Give the floor time to warm up
Electric floor warming is designed to provide gradual, consistent warmth. The time needed to reach the desired temperature depends on the floor construction, insulation, starting temperature, and thermostat settings. A concrete slab may take considerably longer to warm than a thinner floor assembly. If the thermostat is requesting heat and the system appears to be operating normally, allow sufficient time before assuming something is wrong.
If these checks don't solve the problem
A qualified electrician can investigate the electrical supply, thermostat connections, floor sensor, and heating cable resistance. These tests help distinguish between a control issue, a power supply problem, and a possible heating cable fault. You can also contact EZFloorHeat with your product information and a description of the symptoms. We'll help you determine what information is needed for the next step.
4Understanding common floor warming problems
The following guide explains several common symptoms and the most appropriate next steps.
| What you're experiencing | What may be happening | Recommended next step |
|---|---|---|
| Thermostat is on, but floor is cold | Incorrect settings or insufficient warm-up time | Review heating mode, setpoint, and floor sensor configuration |
| Thermostat has no power | Breaker or electrical supply issue | Check the breaker; have an electrician inspect if needed |
| GFCI keeps tripping | Possible ground fault or wiring problem | Leave the system off and have it tested |
| Only part of the floor feels warm | Cable layout, heat loss, or zone differences | Review installation layout and test results |
| Thermostat shows a sensor error | Sensor wiring or sensor failure | Have the sensor circuit tested |
| Floor isn't heating despite a call for heat | Possible control, relay, supply, or cable issue | Have an electrician check the electrical system |
| Floor feels unusually hot | Incorrect controls, sensor placement, or another fault | Turn the system off and arrange professional inspection |
What about multiple GFCI devices?
Some installations may have both a GFCI-protected circuit breaker and a thermostat with built-in GFCI protection. This arrangement can complicate troubleshooting, but the presence of two devices does not by itself establish the cause of a trip. Your electrician should verify the correct circuit protection arrangement using the thermostat instructions and applicable electrical codes. Never remove required ground-fault protection simply to prevent tripping.
Could the wrong voltage be causing the problem?
Yes. Heating cables are manufactured for specific operating voltages, typically 120 or 240 volts. Connecting a heating cable to the wrong supply voltage can result in poor performance, overheating, or product damage. A qualified electrician should confirm that the supply voltage matches the product label. Do not energize a system if there is any uncertainty about voltage compatibility.
What if the thermostat or floor sensor is defective?
Thermostat and floor sensor problems can sometimes produce symptoms similar to a heating cable fault. An electrician can test the sensor resistance and evaluate the thermostat's operation before considering more invasive repairs. If a sensor is defective, a compatible replacement may be available. Whether it can be replaced without disturbing flooring depends on how the original sensor was installed. This is one reason we recommend evaluating the controls and wiring before assuming the heating cable itself is damaged.
5What if the heating cable itself is damaged?
If the initial troubleshooting steps and electrical tests indicate a possible heating cable fault, the next step is to determine whether the cable can be located and repaired. A suspected cable problem doesn't automatically mean your entire floor needs to be replaced.
EasyHeat® offers specialized fault-location equipment that qualified electricians can use to identify certain types of heating cable damage beneath finished flooring.
How the repair process works
- Confirm the electrical test results. Your electrician checks the heating cable's conductor resistance and insulation resistance. These measurements help determine whether further cable diagnostics are warranted.
- Contact EasyHeat® Technical Services. Once the results indicate a possible cable fault, your electrician can contact the manufacturer to discuss the findings and request specialized fault-location equipment when appropriate.
- Locate the affected area. The manufacturer's equipment may help identify the approximate location of the fault, potentially reducing the amount of flooring that needs to be disturbed.
- Evaluate the repair options. If the damage is suitable for a manufacturer-authorized repair, a qualified professional can use the approved repair materials and procedures. The system must be retested before being returned to service.
The amount of flooring removal and repair work required depends on the nature and location of the damage. Repairs aren't always possible, and any flooring removal, replacement, and related labor costs should be discussed with your contractor.
How do I obtain EasyHeat®'s cable fault-location equipment?
EZFloorHeat doesn't stock or distribute the specialized factory fault-location kit. When the manufacturer determines that the equipment is appropriate, it can arrange shipment directly to a qualified electrician, generally at the electrician's business address. A refundable deposit may be required, subject to the manufacturer's current terms.
EasyHeat® Technical Services: (800) 537-4732, Option 5 · [email protected]. Canadian support: (800) 794-3766.
We recommend completing the initial troubleshooting and electrical tests before requesting this equipment. Many thermostat, sensor, and power-related problems can be resolved without specialized cable diagnostics.
Can I use a DFTRK repair kit to fix the cable myself?
The DFTRK repair kit is intended for certain manufacturer-authorized heating cable repairs. It isn't a general-purpose repair accessory and shouldn't be used to shorten cable, modify the original installation, or attempt an unapproved repair. Before purchasing or using a repair kit, contact EasyHeat® Technical Services to confirm that your particular cable and damage are eligible for repair.
6Information your electrician may need
If your installation requires additional troubleshooting, EasyHeat® Technical Services may ask your electrician to complete the manufacturer's Warm Tiles® Troubleshooting Checklist (TSHCS-FW02). The checklist helps organize the product details, installation history, symptoms, and electrical measurements needed to evaluate the problem.
This section is intended for qualified electrical professionals. Homeowners don't need to perform electrical tests or access thermostat wiring.

| Heating cable conductor resistance | Within -5% to +10% of factory label |
| Conductor to ground braid | Open circuit (OL/infinity) |
| Insulation resistance at 500 V DC | Minimum 10 MΩ |
| Conductor-to-conductor reading above 5,000 Ω | Additional insulation testing as directed |
| Thermostat LINE voltage | Approximately 120 V or 240 V AC, as applicable |
| Thermostat LOAD voltage when calling for heat | Normally corresponds to the correct supply voltage |
For applicable products, the 120-volt heating conductor pair is black and white; the 240-volt pair is black and red. Confirm identification against the actual product documentation.
All resistance and insulation tests must be performed with power disconnected and the equipment appropriately isolated. Only a qualified professional should perform energized voltage testing. Sensitive electronic controls and sensors must be protected from insulation test voltages.
If a measurement is outside the manufacturer's specified range, record the actual value rather than substituting an expected result. The completed information can be submitted to EasyHeat® Technical Services for further review.

EasyHeat® Sno*Melter® systems are designed to help keep driveways, walkways, steps, and other outdoor surfaces safer by reducing snow and ice buildup.
If your system isn't turning on when expected, snow isn't melting evenly, or your controller isn't responding as it should, we're here to help.
Explore our troubleshooting guides to identify common issues, understand what might be happening, and find the right next steps to get your system working as intended.
Many issues can be related to temperature and moisture sensors, controller settings, electrical connections, or operating conditions rather than the heating cable or mat itself.
This guide covers Sno*Melter® G-Mats, stair-tread heating mats, SMK heating cable, SA-1 automatic controls, and MSC-1 multi-zone controllers. Our goal is to help you understand the system, recognize common issues, and know when a qualified electrician or EasyHeat® Technical Services should be involved.
1Start with a successful installation
The most effective way to prevent snow melting problems is to plan the installation carefully, protect the heating elements during construction, and complete the manufacturer’s required electrical testing before the surface is finished.
Unlike indoor floor warming systems, snow melting cables and mats are installed beneath concrete, asphalt, pavers, or other approved outdoor surfaces. Once the surface is completed, accessing a damaged heating element can be difficult and costly.
Protect your heating cable and mats during construction
Sno*Melter® heating cables and mats must be handled carefully throughout placement, fastening, and surface finishing. Avoid walking directly on unsecured cable, dropping tools or materials onto heating elements, or allowing heavy equipment to damage them. Heating cables must never be cut, shortened, crossed, or overlapped.
When installing G-Mats or stair-tread mats, maintain the factory heating cable configuration. Supporting mesh may only be adjusted where expressly permitted, without cutting or damaging cable. For SMK loose cable, follow approved spacing and fastening requirements.
Follow these important installation practices
- Select the correct heating product. Use outdoor-rated Sno*Melter® products approved for the intended pavement or stair construction. Indoor Warm Tiles® products are not interchangeable with outdoor snow melting products.
- Maintain required cable spacing. Heating cables must never touch, cross, or overlap. Follow manufacturer clearances.
- Embed the entire heating portion. All heating cable, including cable transitioning between heated areas, must remain fully embedded within the approved installation assembly.
- Install at the correct depth. G-Mats are typically positioned approximately 2 inches below the finished concrete surface, subject to product-specific instructions. Other assemblies may differ.
- Protect factory connections. Position cold-lead splices, terminations, and transitions as EasyHeat® specifies.
- Plan for expansion joints. Review approved routing before installation; structural movement joints require special attention.
- Confirm voltage and electrical capacity. Match products to supply voltage and provide appropriately rated circuits, controls, contactors, and protection.
- Plan for drainage. Meltwater must drain without collecting and refreezing in adjacent areas.
Before pouring concrete or covering the heating system, complete and document required electrical tests.
Can heating cables cross between separate snow melting areas?
Certain installations may allow a continuous heating cable to serve adjoining areas when the layout meets manufacturer requirements. For example, a properly designed SMK installation may extend from a walkway into an adjoining landing.
The entire heating portion must remain embedded within approved mortar, concrete, or another manufacturer-approved assembly, including cable connecting heated areas. Never route heating cable through open air, conduit, wall cavities, or other unapproved spaces. Follow restrictions at expansion joints and structural separations; separate circuits may be necessary.
2Test your Sno*Melter® system throughout installation
Electrical testing helps verify that heating elements remain in good condition as installation progresses. Keep results, product labels, installation photographs, and layout drawings with your project documents.
Test 1 — Before installation
Test each mat or cable kit before installation and compare results with factory resistance information to establish a starting condition.
Test 2 — After positioning and securing the heating system
Repeat required tests after securing heating elements, before covering the surface, to help identify placement or fastening damage.
Test 3 — After the surface installation is completed
Repeat tests after the approved surface is installed and before energizing. Compare measurements with earlier results.
What electrical measurements should be recorded?
A qualified installer or electrician should perform the tests required for the specific Sno*Melter® product.
| Test | What it helps verify |
|---|---|
| Heating conductor resistance | Heating circuit remains within specified resistance range |
| Conductor-to-ground insulation resistance | Cable insulation maintains electrical integrity |
| Grounding and bonding continuity | Required protective grounding connections remain intact |
| Supply voltage | Electrical supply matches product rating |
| Sensor measurements | Applicable temperature and moisture sensors function within specification |
Insulation resistance testing requires specialized equipment and procedures. Do not apply insulation test voltages to connected electronic controllers or sensors. Follow the manufacturer’s product-specific test voltage, limits, and procedures; do not assume indoor Warm Tiles® values apply.
What if a test result changes during installation?
Stop work before covering heating elements if a measurement is outside the manufacturer’s acceptable range or changes unexpectedly. Investigate possible cable, insulation, or connection damage. Do not energize until evaluated and corrected.
3My snow melting system isn't activating. What should I check?
Automatic snow melting controllers may require both sufficiently low temperature and detected moisture before activating. Start with these checks before assuming the heating elements have failed.
Check whether the conditions are calling for heat
The SA-1 uses temperature and moisture sensing, with a nominal activation threshold of approximately 38°F. Above the operating threshold, or when the sensor detects no moisture, the system may remain off. This may be normal.
Check the controller’s operating mode
For MSC-1 systems, review operating mode, zone settings, and displayed status. The MSC-1 can manage up to three zones with priority and hold-time settings. A disabled or delayed zone may not heat when expected.
Check the circuit breaker
Confirm the control circuit has power. A breaker may be reset once when safe and no electrical fault is apparent. If it trips again, leave it off and contact an electrician. Larger systems may have separate controller and heating circuit supplies.
Check the temperature and moisture sensors
Sensors that are obstructed, damaged, disconnected, or poorly located may not detect representative conditions. Aerial sensors should detect precipitation; in-pavement sensors should be installed per manufacturer requirements. A professional can test them.
Allow sufficient time for the surface to warm
Concrete and outdoor surfaces can take substantial time to warm, especially from very low temperatures. Automatic activation helps begin warming before significant accumulation.
If these checks do not solve the problem
A qualified electrician can evaluate controller, sensors, contactors, supply voltage, and heating circuits. EZFloorHeat can help identify documentation and determine when to contact EasyHeat® Technical Services.
4Understanding common Sno*Melter® problems
| What you experience | What may be happening | Recommended next step |
|---|---|---|
| Snow falling; system does not activate | Temperature/moisture not detected | Check controller and sensor exposure |
| Controller on; pavement cold | Heating circuit or contactor not operating | Electrician checks heating circuit |
| One area melts; another does not | Zone settings, wiring, or circuit issue | Review zones and electrical operation |
| Uneven snow melting | Spacing, depth, heat loss, or drainage | Review installation layout |
| Shuts off too soon | Hold-time or sensor conditions | Review controller settings and sensors |
| Runs with no visible snow | Residual moisture or hold-on cycle | Inspect sensors and settings |
| Breaker repeatedly trips | Overload, ground fault, or component fault | Leave off; arrange electrical testing |
| Ice at heated-area edge | Meltwater reaches unheated area | Evaluate drainage and refreezing |
Why does only part of my driveway or walkway melt snow?
Cable spacing and installation depth affect heat distribution; greater heat loss can slow warming. Multi-zone systems may prioritize one area. Meltwater can refreeze outside heated surfaces. If a section never warms, an electrician should check its heating circuit.
Why does my system continue running after snow stops?
Automatic controls often include a hold-on period to melt remaining snow and allow drainage. The SA-1 has a nominal hold-on period of about 2.75 hours; MSC-1 hold-on time is adjustable approximately 0–10 hours. Review settings if operation seems excessive.
Why does it turn on when it is not snowing?
Rain, condensation, residual moisture, or a programmed hold-on cycle may cause operation. If unusually frequent, inspect sensor location and controller settings.
What if the controller shows heat is active but pavement stays cold?
A heating request does not confirm power reaches the heating elements. Larger MSC-1 installations use external contactors; a failed contactor, disconnected circuit, or tripped breaker can prevent heating. Have an electrician test these components.
5Troubleshooting your Sno*Melter® controller and sensors
SA-1 Automatic Snow Melting Controller
The SA-1 is designed for smaller installations, combining temperature and moisture sensing. It can operate compatible heating loads within its published electrical rating (approximately 16 amps), without a separate contactor when permitted by the installation requirements.
What should I check if my SA-1 is not activating?
Confirm temperature and moisture conditions are within its operating range; the nominal threshold is approximately 38°F. Check power and that sensing surfaces are unobstructed and undamaged. If the controller appears to operate but pavement stays cold, an electrician should verify supply, output, and heating circuit. Never exceed the SA-1 rated load.
MSC-1 Multi-Zone Snow Melting Controller
The MSC-1 can manage up to three zones using compatible sensors and may operate zones independently or by priority. It uses external contactors to switch heating loads; controller outputs do not directly power the mats or cables.
What should I check if one MSC-1 zone is not working?
Confirm the zone is enabled and not delayed by priority settings. An electrician should then check its contactor, electrical supply, and heating circuit.
What do the snow melting sensors do?
| Sensor | Primary purpose |
|---|---|
| MSA-1 Aerial Sensor | Detects precipitation and moisture above heated surface |
| MSP-1 In-Pavement Sensor | Detects moisture and temperature at pavement |
| MSG-1 Gutter Sensor | Detects moisture in compatible gutter/downspout applications |
| TS-1 Temperature Sensor | Provides temperature information to compatible controls |
Correct selection and placement depend on the controller and installation.
What if a sensor is damaged or stops working?
A faulty sensor can prevent activation or cause unexpected operation. An electrician can inspect wiring and test according to EasyHeat® instructions. Compatible replacements may be available; an embedded pavement sensor can be more difficult to replace than an aerial sensor. Contact EZFloorHeat for help identifying a replacement.
6What if the heating cable or mat is damaged?
If controller, sensors, contactors, and supply appear normal but the heating circuit fails manufacturer tests, the heating cable or mat may be damaged. A suspected fault does not automatically mean the entire surface must be replaced. Specialized diagnostics may help locate damage, but embedded outdoor repairs are complex and not always possible.
How the troubleshooting and repair process works
- Confirm electrical measurements. An electrician compares heating circuit and insulation resistance readings with manufacturer specifications.
- Contact EasyHeat® Technical Services. The manufacturer reviews results and advises on appropriate diagnostics.
- Determine whether the fault can be located. Specialized equipment or testing may identify the affected area depending on product and fault type.
- Evaluate repair options. EasyHeat® should confirm repair eligibility, materials, and approved procedures.
- Retest before returning to service. Any approved repair must be completed and tested to manufacturer requirements before energizing.
Do not splice, shorten, or repair a Sno*Melter® cable with unapproved materials. Do not assume the DFTRK repair kit for certain indoor Warm Tiles® cables is suitable for outdoor Sno*Melter® products.
Will a cable repair be covered by warranty?
Limited warranties depend on the product and applicable terms, installation conditions, and cause of failure. Removal and replacement of pavement or surrounding materials generally are not covered unless expressly included. Contact EasyHeat® before disturbing the installation.
