Flexible Snow Melting for Almost Any Layout.
EasyHeat® Sno*Melter® SMK cable kits provide a versatile solution for melting snow and ice on outdoor surfaces where standard heating mats may not be the best fit. Unlike preassembled mats, SMK heating cables can be arranged to follow the shape of your project, making them ideal for curved walkways, irregularly shaped patios, stairways, driveway edges, and other challenging layouts.
Designed for installation in concrete, SMK cables offer flexible spacing options to accommodate different snow melting requirements. This allows installers to customize heating coverage and output based on the project's layout and conditions.
SMK cable kits can be integrated with compatible Sno*Melter® controls for convenient operation, including automatic activation when snow and ice conditions are detected.
Whether you're planning a new installation or upgrading an existing outdoor area, SMK cables provide the flexibility to create a snow melting system tailored to your space.
Best for: Irregularly shaped walkways, patios, stairways, driveway edges, and other outdoor areas where standard snow melting mats cannot provide practical coverage.
Installing Your Sno*Melter® SMK Cable
A Little Planning Makes All the Difference
EasyHeat® Sno*Melter® SMK cable kits are installed under concrete or pavers on walks, steps, patios, and driveways where a preassembled mat may not follow the shape of the space.
Proper spacing and installation are essential for safe, reliable performance. Before getting started, review the manufacturer's installation instructions and work with your installer and qualified electrician.
Laying the Cable
Secure the heating cable to properly installed welded-wire mesh or rebar using the twist ties included with the kit. Keep the spacing consistent throughout the heated area.
On 240 V kits, 3-inch spacing is about 45 watts per square foot, and 4-inch spacing is about 35 watts per square foot.
Do not cross the heating cable.
Stairs
For stairs, plan on three runs of cable on each tread. To estimate the cable length, multiply the step width by 3 and by the number of stairs, then add the total height of the stairs for the cable in the risers.
For example, 8 steps that are each 6 feet wide, with a total stair height of 6 feet, need about 150 feet of cable.
Expansion Joints
Do not run heating cable through expansion joints for more than 20 feet. Follow the manufacturer's requirements for these crossings.
Embedding the Cable
Connect the cables and conduit before the paving materials go in.
For concrete, pour directly over the heating cables, then level the surface to finish. SMK cable can also be installed under pavers.
SMK cable kits are not for asphalt. For asphalt, use Sno*Melter® G-Mats.
The Cold Lead
Each kit includes a 20-foot non-heating cold lead. Do not cut or shorten the heating cable. Only the cold lead may be shortened.
Controls
Position the controls and sensors before the surface is finished. Controls are not included with the cable kit.
Important Installation Reminder
Always follow the EasyHeat® installation instructions supplied with your product. These contain the requirements for cable placement, spacing, and embedding.
Have all electrical connections completed by a qualified electrician in accordance with applicable codes.
