Installation
EasyHeat® Warm Tiles® DFT Cable Systems provide a flexible way to add comfortable warmth beneath tile and other approved flooring surfaces. The heating cable is secured using installation strapping, allowing it to follow room contours and accommodate irregular layouts, permanent fixtures, and other obstacles. Once positioned, the cable is embedded in a cement-based underlayment before the finished flooring is installed.
Planning Your Layout
Measure only the areas of the floor you intend to warm, excluding spaces beneath cabinets and permanent fixtures. Plan your cable layout to provide consistent warmth throughout the heated area, following the manufacturer's recommended spacing for your particular installation.
Maintain the required clearance between adjacent cable runs and from walls, and avoid sharp bends by maintaining a minimum bend radius of ¾ inch. Never cross or overlap heating cables.
Preparing the Floor
Begin with a clean, stable, and properly prepared subfloor suitable for the selected flooring material. Make sure the surface is free of debris, sharp objects, and irregularities that could damage the heating cable or interfere with the finished flooring.
Installing the Cable
Secure the heating cable using the appropriate installation strapping, following your planned layout and the manufacturer's spacing instructions. Standard spacing is typically used over heated spaces, while an alternating spacing pattern may be appropriate over concrete slabs or unheated areas, as specified in the installation guide.
Never cut, shorten, or modify the heating cable. Only the non-heating cold lead may be shortened. At least 6 inches of cold lead, including the factory identification tag, must remain inside the electrical box.
Embedding the System
The heating cable, cold-lead splice, and tail splice must be completely embedded in a cement-based underlayment. Recess the cold-lead splice approximately ¼ inch into the subfloor to help maintain a smooth, even installation surface.
Allow for the additional height of the cable, installation strapping, underlayment, and finished flooring when planning transitions to adjoining rooms.
Approved Flooring
DFT Cable Systems are designed for installation beneath ceramic tile, porcelain tile, marble, natural stone, terrazzo, and approved laminate or floating engineered hardwood flooring.
These materials can accommodate the controlled warmth produced by the heating cable when installed using the appropriate underlayment and flooring assembly. Always confirm that the selected flooring is approved for electric radiant floor warming.
Flooring Not Approved
DFT Cable Systems should not be installed beneath carpet, vinyl composition tile (VCT), linoleum-type flooring, or nailed-down wood flooring unless the specific application is expressly approved in current manufacturer documentation.
Carpet and certain resilient flooring materials can restrict heat transfer or be sensitive to elevated temperatures, potentially causing overheating, discoloration, or damage. Nailed-down wood flooring introduces the additional risk of fasteners penetrating and damaging the heating cable.
Electrical Connections & Safety
GFCI protection is required. Electrical connections should be completed by a licensed electrician in accordance with applicable electrical codes and the manufacturer's installation instructions.
Test the heating cable's electrical resistance and insulation integrity at the stages specified in the installation guide, including before, during, and after installation. Record the results for future reference.
Before You Begin
Review the complete EasyHeat® DFT Cable installation guide before starting your project. Proper cable spacing, electrical testing, embedding procedures, and flooring compatibility are essential for safe operation, reliable performance, and maintaining manufacturer warranty coverage.
