Installation
EasyHeat® Warm Tiles® DMC Cable Systems provide a convenient, low-profile way to add comfortable warmth beneath tile and other approved flooring surfaces. Designed for use with compatible uncoupling membranes, the heating cable fits directly between the membrane's raised supports, eliminating the need for separate installation strapping.
The membrane helps organize and secure the cable while providing the benefits of an uncoupling layer between the subfloor and finished flooring.
Planning Your Layout
Measure only the areas of the floor you intend to warm, excluding spaces beneath cabinets and permanent fixtures. Plan your heating area carefully, accounting for room dimensions, permanent obstacles, and the appropriate cable spacing pattern.
DMC Cable Systems offer three installation patterns, depending on the desired heating output and the manufacturer's instructions:
- Standard Spacing: Approximately 12 watts per square foot, using a consistent three-lug spacing pattern.
- Alternating Spacing: Approximately 15 watts per square foot, using an alternating two-lug and three-lug pattern.
- Dense Spacing: Approximately 18 watts per square foot, using a consistent two-lug spacing pattern.
Select the appropriate spacing before installation and maintain the specified pattern throughout the heated area. Never cross or overlap heating cables, and maintain a minimum bend radius of ¾ inch.
Preparing the Floor & Membrane
Begin with a clean, stable, and properly prepared subfloor suitable for the selected uncoupling membrane and finished flooring.
Install the membrane according to its manufacturer's instructions, ensuring it is properly secured and compatible with electric floor warming. DMC cables can be used with appropriately designed uncoupling membranes from various manufacturers, provided the membrane supports the required cable dimensions and spacing.
Installing the Cable
Carefully press the heating cable into the channels between the membrane supports, following your planned layout and selected spacing pattern. The cable should fit securely without stretching, pinching, or forcing it into position.
Never cut, shorten, or modify the heating cable. Only the non-heating cold lead may be shortened in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Installing the Finished Floor
Once the heating cable is properly positioned and tested, complete the installation using the setting materials and procedures specified by the membrane and flooring manufacturers.
The cable is secured within the membrane, eliminating the need for a separate cable-holding layer. The overall floor height will depend on the selected membrane, setting materials, and finished flooring.
Approved Flooring
DMC Cable Systems are designed for installation beneath ceramic tile, porcelain tile, marble, natural stone, and approved laminate or floating engineered hardwood flooring.
These materials can accommodate the controlled warmth produced by the heating cable when installed over a compatible uncoupling membrane and in accordance with the flooring manufacturer's requirements.
Flooring Not Approved
DMC Cable Systems should not be installed beneath carpet, vinyl composition tile (VCT), linoleum-type flooring, or nailed-down wood flooring unless the specific application is expressly approved in current manufacturer documentation.
Carpet and certain resilient flooring materials may restrict heat transfer or be sensitive to elevated temperatures, potentially causing overheating, discoloration, or damage. Nailed-down wood flooring presents an additional risk because nails or other fasteners could penetrate the heating cable or membrane assembly.
Electrical Connections & Safety
GFCI protection is required. Electrical connections should be completed by a licensed electrician in accordance with applicable electrical codes and the manufacturer's installation instructions.
Test the heating cable's electrical resistance and insulation integrity at the stages specified in the installation guide, including before, during, and after installation. Record the results for future reference.
For installations involving shower risers, steps, or other specialized locations, consult the local electrical inspector and applicable manufacturer instructions before proceeding.
Before You Begin
Review the complete EasyHeat® DMC Cable installation guide along with the instructions supplied with your selected uncoupling membrane. Proper cable spacing, membrane compatibility, electrical testing, and flooring selection are essential for safe operation, reliable performance, and maintaining manufacturer warranty coverage.
